Sedat ODABAŞ, Group Leader

Dr. Sedat Odabas (BSc. Biol., Ph.D. Bioeng.) is a Professor and has been a Faculty member of Ankara University, Chemistry Department since 2014. He holds BSc in Biology and MSc and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Hacettepe University.

As he was an integrated Ph.D. researcher, he studied at Ludwig Boltzmann Institute (Vienna, AT) on using gene therapy applications (BMPs) for Auricular Cartilage Engineering on Gelatin/Ox-Dextran Scaffolds both in-vitro and in-vivo rabbit model under the mini-project of the European Commission, 6th Framework Programme for Research, FP6-2002-NMP-1 Network of Excellence: EXPERTISSUES, Novel Therapeutic Strategies for Tissue Engineering of Bone and Cartilage Using Second Generation Biomimetic Scaffolds.

His research focuses on developing biomaterials from blended biopolymers (natural or decellularized) incorporated with other (macro)molecules (such as magnetic nanoparticles, bioactive ceramics, and exosomes) and investigating their mechano-transductive role in altering cell behaviors and their use for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, especially for bone and cartilage regeneration.

Dr. Odabas also serves as a consultant for exosome research, focusing on both animal and plant-derived exosomes for various industrial applications. In addition to his contributions, he provides consulting services for facilities and infrastructure related to exosome production and marketing. His expertise extends beyond research to encompass industrial applications, exploring the potential of exosomes in fields such as biotechnology, personel-care, and pharmaceuticals.

His recent research is mainly based on novel 3D printable functional bioinks to be used for tissue repair and regeneration. Within this perspective, he visited CPA, Technical University Munich, Garching (DE) as a guest researcher in 2022 and 2024.

He has been involved in several nationally (TUBITAK, PSCR) and internationally funded projects (EU, COST) as a Principal Investigator or Head Researcher. He is also the founding president of the Society for Biomaterials Research (BMAD).

Berkay ERENAY, PhD Candidate

Berkay got his BSc. degree from both Istanbul Technical University and Montana State University's Bioengineering Program and had a MSc. from Boğaziçi University, Institute of Biomedical Engineering. His doctoral studies focus on biomimetic perspectives to alter cell behavior by using decellurized cell derived ECM. Prof. Odabaş is the co-advisor for Berkay.

Fulya ÖZDEMİR, PhD Candidate

Fulya has a BSc and MSc degree in Chemistry. She  studied Laccase enzyme kinetics and immobilization on clays. Currently, she is conducting her Ph.D. at Ankara University on photo-reactive polymers  and algal chemistry.

İpek

Melek İpek ERTUĞRUL, PhD Student

Ipek got her MSc degree in Chemistry, worked on hybrid scaffolds, combining melt-electrowriting and decellularization. Currently, she is conducting her PhD on developing decellularization-based bionk formulations and their possible use in the medical field.

Among her PhD studies, she also focusing on developing optimised protocols for the potential biomaterials to be used for medical devices.

Zeliha Esra ÇAKMAK, PhD Student

Esra has joined bteLAB in 2023. She has a BSc. in Bioengineering and conducted her Master with Prof. Kadriye Tuzlakoğlu, studied polymeric electrospun nanofiber membranes containing plant extract for wound healing . She is currently working on plant based bioinks and plant exosomes for industrial uses.

Süveyda KOCACIK, PhD Student

Süveyda has joined bteLAB in 2022. With her chemistry background, she is working on self-gellable decellularized extracellular matrix (D-ECM) hydrogels for wound healing. She also focused on D-ECM based bioinks from varios tissue sources.

Kaan KONAKLI, MSc Student

Kaan joined bteLAB in summer 2023. He has a chemistry background, and the main subject of his study is plant-based biomaterials based on tissue decellularization.

Melissa KILIÇ, MSc Student

Melissa participated in bteLAB in the fall semester of 2024. Her studies are primarily focused on 4D bioprinting together with associated bioink preparation.
